Symphony Orchestra

Rehearses: Mondays, 7:00 – 9:00 pm

Symphony Orchestra is the most advanced full orchestra offered by YSDP, which uses wind, brass, and percussion instruments in all its performances. Musicians in this ensemble are mostly advanced high school-age students (approximately 10th-12th grade) who either have completed or are currently working on movements of a standard concerto. Younger students may audition for the Symphony Orchestra; however, a letter of recommendation from their private lesson teacher may be requested in addition to the audition.

Regular re-seating auditions will be incorporated throughout the season; students will submit any required excerpts online for performance evaluation and demonstration of musical growth.

Under the direction of Music Director Dr. Mark Liu, Symphony Orchestra students rehearse weekly to develop their musical expressiveness, refine orchestral etiquette and techniques, and increase the success of future musical endeavors. Symphony Orchestra performs standard masterpieces such as Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, Brahms’s Symphony No. 1, Tchaikovksy Symphony No. 5, Dvorak’s “New World” Symphony, Prokofiev Classical Symphony, and Schubert “Unfinished” Symphony.
